National Workshop on Air Pollution

Patna, May 9, 2018 - A one day National Workshop on the Air pollution implication of and way forward was organized by Bihar State Disaster Management Authority (BSDMA) in collaboration with the Centre for Environment, Energy & Climate Change (CEECC) at ADRI. The workshop was embarked with the release of the Assessment report of air quality for Patna conducted by BSDMA through Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) by Shri Sushil Kumar Modi Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar. In the Inaugural session Deputy CM of Bihar highlighted the issue of Air Pollution as a serious threat but also pointed out the fact the Data gaps are quite huge, hence there is a need for installations of monitoring stations. Shri Vyas Ji, VC BSDMA highlighted the issue of the Air Pollution take disastrous proportion having implication for health, agriculture and livelihood. He emphasized that before it becomes a major crisis, we should embark on a regime of sound policy enforcement and educate and aware people on Air Pollution. Member BSDMA Dr U K Misra highlighted about Happy Seeding and Straw management system and Shri P N Rai, Member, BSDMA pointed out a long term and short time mitigation measures. Shri Tripurari Sharan Principal Secretary Environment and Forest underlined- that change in mindset is required in coping the crisis that air pollution is about to create. Dr A K Ghosh, Chairman Pollution Control Board highlighted the fact that indoor air pollution is an important contributor and different programmes need to be aligned in these regard. Dr Shaibal Gupta highlighted that Air Pollution roughly contributes 8% to our GDP. The Workshop had participation from around 20 research think tanks and institutes from across India participated in different workshops and technical sessions to come up with a holistic “Patna Declaration on Air Pollution”. The other delegates who were present were Shri Sanjay Agarwal, Secretary Transport, Shri R S Srivastava, MD BIADA and Shri Prataya Amrit, Principal Secretary, Disaster Management. Brief Details: One day National Workshop on “Air Pollution” is organised by Bihar State Disaster Management Authority, Government of Bihar in collaboration with The Centre for Environment, Energy and Climate Change (CEECC), at ADRI on May 9, 201810:30 AM to 18:00 PM at Hotel ChanakyaPatna to release the comprehensive Report on “Air Quality Assessment of Patna”, prepared by The CEECC at ADRI and Bihar State Disaster Management Authority in collaboration with   Indian Institute of Tropical Management (IITM), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India by Shri Sushil Kumar Modi, Hon’bl Deputy CM of Bihar.

 Air pollution is increasingly becoming a cause of concern for many cities in India and Patna is amongst the fifth most polluted cities in the World.The major contributors to Patna’s deteriorating air quality are increasing vehicular population, domestic fuel burning and emissions from brick kilns. As city population increases, developmental processes are taking pace along with, contributing more to the states pollution profile. Air pollution is fatal to human health and above certain level of exposure it causes cancer. Air pollution also induces cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. Long-term strategic policy interventions aimed at reducing air pollution at the source is required to help Bihar achieve clean air goal and support state-wide vision for sustainable development. CEECC at ADRI will also be preparing the Clean Air Action Plan for Patna by the Bihar State Pollution Control Board.

Hence, in this context the National Workshop on “Air Pollution” has been organised to understand the current air quality of Patna and it sectorial impacts. The workshop will alsohighlight the action area and prerequisite policy guidance through panel discussions and consultation from experts across the country which will sum up to a holistic Patna Declaration which will contribute to the Clean Air Action Plans.
