Patna, February 24. A lecture titled “Electrifying Logistics: Assessing the Viability of eLCVs in Jharkhand’s Transport Sector” was delivered virtually by Professor Leeza Malik of Indian Institute of Technology (ISM), Dhanbad today. It was arranged by Centre for Studies on Environment and Climate (CSEC) at Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI). IIT (ISM) Dhanbad had worked on a study in association with ADRI to determine if electric Light Commercial Vehicles (eLCVs) can bring some sustainability to the urban freight sector of Jharkhand. eLCVs play an indispensable role in a city’s economic growth as they are responsible for the movement of commercial goods in the urban areas.
The Professor said that adoption of eLCVs is getting a push because of the pernicious effect of LCVs run on fossil fuels on the environment. She stated that eLCV penetration rate is going to reach 27 percent by 2030 in India. Nobody had studied how Jharkhand’s electrification of freight vehicles was going to happen. ADRI stepped in and made a comprehensive survey of different types of eLCVs like mini-trucks, pick-up trucks, 3-wheeled goods carriers and 2-wheelers. One key finding from this study is that the transport of vegetables and construction material can be carried out by e LCVs and the government should give priority to its adoption for these two items. Also, innovative financial schemes should be designed. Charging stations should be installed at right places based on the movement pattern of electric vehicles.
