Concept Note
A rapidly urbanizing India in general and Bihar in particular has to deal with the problem of how to manage increasing solid wastes being generated in our cities in an environmentally-friendly manner. ADRI is organizing a workshop on the topic of “Urban Development with Emphasis on Solid Waste Management: The Case of Patna” on 29th November, 2024. Leading experts from all over the country will deliberate on how to tackle this issue keeping Patna as an exemplar for a Tier-2 city in India. There will be five presentations on (i) Mainstreaming Nature Positive Strategy; (ii) Urban Planning in India: Macro and Micro-Scale – The Do’s and Don’ts; (iii)Economics of Solid Waste Management; (iv) Guiding Steps for City-Wide Sustainable Waste Management Solutions: Case Studies from Saahas’ Interventions, and (v) Disentangling the chicken or egg problem of household waste sorting and segregated waste collection: A randomized control experiment in India, as well as several brainstorming sessions on the papers presented and the topic in general.
Patna, November 29. Government of Bihar’s Hon’ble Minister of Urban Development & Housing Shree Nitin Nabin said that Patna’s sustainable development will take place only if its area is expanded through the planned emergence of satellite cities. He was speaking as the Chief Guest at a workshop titled “Urban Development with Emphasis on Solid Waste Management: The Case of Patna” organized by Asian Development Research Institute’s (ADRI’s) Centre for Studies on Environment and Climate (CSEC) today. The workshop was chaired by Professor Ajit Sinha, Director, ADRI and attended by experts on sustainable development and waste management from all over the country. The Minister added that the mentioned satellite cities would come up around a Ring Road and will be served by the Patna Metro Rail whose first phase will become operational from August 15 next year.
