Job Title: Junior Program Officer India

Job Summary: The International Growth Centre aims to promote sustainable growth in developing countries by providing demand-led policy advice based on frontier research. The IGC organizes and directs a global network of researchers and policy experts in economics, political economy and related disciplines, and works closely with developing country governments to undertake high quality research and provide policy advice on economic growth topics. Based at LSE and in partnership with the University of Oxford, the IGC is initiated and funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF) in India and the Asian Development Research Institute (ADRI), the IGC is currently implementing a programme of work focussed on building a strong, sustainable ecosystem of monitoring and evaluation in Bihar, India.
The Junior Program Officer (JPO) is responsible for the smooth operation of the IGC’s country programme in India, including matters related to office activities, equipment, communications, maintenance contracts, organizing logistics for in-country events, liaising with the IGC Hub and assisting in research occasionally. Locally based, the JPO works closely with the rest of the country team, which typically consists of a Country Director, Country Co-Director, Lead Academic, Programme Manager and Country Economists. The Junior Program Officer reports to the Programme Manager.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Undertake administrative duties, including but not limited to responsible for secretarial duties including arranging appointments for all members of Country Team.
- Acting as first point of contact for any administrative matters to determine appropriate action. To support correspondence and communication including drafting correspondence, responding to routine enquiries, logging all mail received, and undertaking follow-up communication as required.
- Responsible for ensuring implementation of effective IGC branding, in all forms of communication, interpersonal interaction, and publications generated locally, in alignment with the IGC branding policy
- Assist in the creation of and maintenance of a database of contacts for use by the Country Team and IGC hub, including but not limited to those in the government, business, and civil society sectors.
- Assist the Country Team with all office needs, ensuring smooth operation of ongoing office administrative functions and maintaining an accurate asset register.
- Assist the Country Team with organizing country and regional events, including the location and booking of venues, invitations for attendees, preparing relevant materials for events, booking travel and accommodation for event attendees, and other logistical tasks. This includes working with other Country Team members on publicity for events, press releases, and other related tasks.
- Coordinate all catering requirements for the office staff and related events, for the team and for visitors. This includes budgeting and costing for all orders made in consultation with the hosting organization.
- Liaise regularly with the IGC Hub, including assisting in the preparation of all reports from the Country programme office to IGC Hub ensuring accurate and up to date programme data.
- Assist in preparation of the weekly news summaries and assist in research and provide logistical project support as required. Proofread materials and occasionally conduct literature searches as directed.
- Facilitate communication between the PLT and IGC London Hub colleagues to ensure the integration of the programme-relevant policy and the IGC research agenda, in the context of the evolving local context. This will be through diary management, arranging meetings, teleconferences, and virtual meetings.
- Flexibility To deliver services effectively, a degree of flexibility may be required in the duties performed in order to meet the exigencies of service.
Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Economics, Development Studies, Public Policy or relevant Social Sciences discipline from reputed university with data analysis skills and strong track record of outstanding academic performance
- At least three years of experience working in a professional setting
- Fluent in English and Hindi
- Proficiency in all packages within the MS Office suite
- Interest in working on India’s economic and development issues. Ability to make sense of complex problems and identify questions that could be answered through applied economics research.
- Ability to work both autonomously and in a team.
- Willingness to work in rural/peri-urban areas and travel extensively across India (if required).
Starting date and length of commitment: May 2020. Initially a 10 months contract with a possibility of extension.
