SRC, ADRI has always taken up key research studies in the field of literacy and related social issues.

2004-05

(I)    Mid-Term Impact Assessment of Special Programme for Female Literacy in Jamui (Bihar)

Objectives:

  1. To assess the literacy levels of at least 5000 women learners under special female literacy programme at the Primer level I.
  2. To examine the organizational strengths and weaknesses of the ZSS, including maintenance of a proper literacy data base and distribution of teaching-learning material. 
  3. To review the role and involvement of Panchayati Raj functionaries in conducting of special programme for women literacy.
  4. To ascertain the impact of the special initiatives for improving female literacy.
  5. To suggest corrective measures to the concerned ZSS functionaries and also provide a schedule for the final assessment of the learners. 

Major Findings:

  1. Absence of decentralization of powers and functions among the functionaries of ZSS, both at the district and block levels.
  2. Involvement of PRI representatives in the programme was not ensured.
  3. Achievement of genuine learners among Muslim, SCs and STs lagged behind compared to the upper caste learners.
  4. The teaching learning materials were not distributed timely and properly among the learners.

(II)    Concurrent Evaluation of Total Literacy Campaign in Araria district.

Objectives:

  1. Examine the operational strategies and implementation process in the light of approved plan of Action.
  2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of TLC.
  3. Ascertain the factors responsible for the strengths and weaknesses; and
  4. Suggest corrective and remedial measures. 

Major Findings:

  1. Despite initial delay in opening up of the literacy centers, the teaching learning phase has been completed at most of the centers.
  2. The achievement rate shows that the females are ahead of their male counter part due mainly to the special female literacy drive.
  3. There was a marked achievement as result of the involvement of Panchayati Raj Institutions in the whole campaign process.
  4. Because of the involvement of the Imams, the number of Muslim learners was found to be high at the centers. The achievement level of Muslim learners was also relatively high.

(III)    Concurrent Evaluation of Total Literacy Campaign in East Champaran district.

Objectives:

  1. Examine the operational strategies and implementation process in the light of approved plan of Action.
  2. Identify the strengths and weaknesses of TLC.
  3. Ascertain the factors responsible for the strengths and weakness; and
  4. Suggest corrective and remedial measures.

Major Findings:

  1. There existed a time lag between sanction and actual implementation of TLC project.
  2. The teaching learning phase of Primer I successfully completed in the stipulated time frame in the district.
  3. The coverage of female learners in the campaign was much higher than males.
  4. Some of the VTs after taking initial training, remained absent in the 1st and 2nd phase of training.
