About ENVIS

From the urge of understanding our environment and its nature, Government of India implemented the central sector scheme Environmental Information System (ENVIS) with the purpose of collection, collation, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information related to various aspects of environment sector. It was set up in December, 1982 under Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change. Currently ENVIS scheme is under Umbrella Scheme of "Environmental Awareness, Protection and Monitoring". As environment is a multi-disciplinary subject, to develop a comprehensive information system on various sectors of environment it needs participation of the institutes/organizations working on different arena of environment. Therefore, a network of participating organizations has been developed to make the programme effective. Currently, there are 69 centres in the ENVIS network working on 5 broad thematic areas which are Ecology and Ecosystem Services, Environment and Society, Environment and Technology, Environment and Policy and Biodiversity. Among these 69 centres, 29 centres deal with "State of environment and related issues" and hosted by Environment/ Forest Department of State Governments/ UT Administration. Rest are hosted by the government and non-government organizations/institutes working on environment related issues.
